The State of Michigan is divided into two peninsulas, joined together by a suspension bridge. Heavy snowfalls in winter are the norm in the Upper Peninsula and in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula. Surrounded by the Great Lakes helps moderate temperatures, but even so, the average highs in January are near 10 degrees in the northern areas, and around 20 degrees in the southern reaches. The lakes help cool the shorelines on summer days and humidity is rarely a problem. Statewide annual precipitation is near 35 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula along the Lake Michigan and Lake Superior shorelines. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but as a general rule, the state experiences less of these storms than do other states.
